Situated on the Water of Fleet, Gatehouse of Fleet was an early thriving port.
In the 18th Century the town became Galloway's leading industrial centre with four cotton mills, a tannery, a muslin factory and a brewery. The history of the area is recorded in the Mill on the Fleet visitor centre - a restored 18th Century cotton mill.
Gatehouse of Fleet was a planned town laid out on a grid pattern by James Murray of Broughton with cotton mills and a brewery close to the water which provided the power to drive the machinery.
A canal was cut by Irish labourers (Murray had estates in Ireland) to improve the harbour. There are a number of 18th and 19th Century workers cottages, with larger two storey houses for artisans and craftsmen.
Memories of Robert Burns can be evoked at the Murray Arms Hotel where the poet is said to have composed the words of 'Scots wha hae'.
One mile south west of Gatehouse of Fleet is the 15th century Cardoness Castle - a well preserved tower house and the ancient home of the McCullochs.
Further afield are:
CARSLUITH
Location of Carsluith Castle, a well preserved ruin of a four storied 16th century tower house and Cairnholy, two chambered cairns dating back to about 2000BC.
Now also the home of the Galloway Smokehouse suppliers of quality smoked products, fresh local fish and game.
