The Wicker Man and Dumfries & Galloway

'The Wicker Man' (GB 1973) was filmed almost entirely on location in Dumfries and Galloway, predominantly in the Kirkcudbright area.

the wicker manA policeman flies to a remote Scottish isle to investigate the disappearance of a child and finds himself in the midst of a sinister situation dating back to the days of pagan practices and fertility rites.

The opening scenes of the seaplane in flight were filmed over Skye, Sgt Howie's arrival at Summerisle was actually shot at Plockton in Rosshire. However, the remainder of the film was shot in the Kirkcudbright area.

The film is possessed of a weird and paganistic story. Anthony Shaffer penned the screenplay which, for sheer imagination and near-terror, has seldom been equaled.

Starring Edward Woodward, Britt Ekland, Christopher Lee, Ingrid Pitt and many of the Kirkcudbright locals - we'd love to hear from any of them if they want to share there film star tales!
