Coming for a holiday? About the Sanquhar, Wanlockhead, Kirkconnel and Durisdeer area

The town of SanquharThe Most northern town of Dumfries and Galloway is Sanquhar.

Sanquhar has a golf course, a leisure centre, the Sanquhar Tolbooth Museum and many opportunities for walks and picnics among the hills over which the Southern Upland Way passes.

An interesting collection of historic items are displayed with the 19th century Sanquhar Church and the Sanquhar Historic Walk is a trail map through the town following historic plaques and taking in the 18th Century Tolbooth and Sanquhar's Castle, of which now only traces remain.

The Castle saw much conflict, and the town recalls it's history with an annual Riding of the Marches, the climax of its Gala week.

KIRKCONNEL

North of Sanquhar is Kirkconnel, a former mining village with a memorial to all the miners killed over the years in the former mines. The glens and hills around this area provided a refuge for the Covenanters.

DURISDEER

South east of Sanquhar is Durisdeer with its church, dating from 1699, containing the "Queensberry Marbles" which represents the recumbent figures of the second Duke and Duchess of the Queensberry family of nearby Drumlanrig Castle. The Well Path was part of medieval pilgrimage route to Whithorn in the west of Galloway.

Wanlockhead

From Sanquhar a drive east on the B797 leads into the impressive Lowther Hills where several summits rise over 610 metres (2,000ft) to the Scottish Lead Mining Museum at Wanlockhead. This is Scotland's highest village, 450 metres above sea level and the source of much mineral wealth dug from the surrounding hills. Here can be discovered what it meant to live in a miners home or work in a lead mine, see a walk-in mine beam engine, smelt mill and water lades.
