Thornhill

The town of ThornhillThe Main Centre of Nithsdale is Thornhill - an attractive town with unusually wide main street lined with carefully trimmed trees. The houses are an example of the typical local architecture at its best. Visitors and can enjoy golf, tennis, bowling and squash or fishing either the rivers or lochs in the district.

The winged horse on top of the column in the village is the emblem of the Queensberry family whose great 17th century mansion of Drumlanrig lies tot he west. This cross between a castle and a place is built in pink sandstone with numerous turrets and a sweeping entrance stair. Its finely decorated rooms are full of treasures.

Nearby are the ruins of the 14th Century Morton Castle majestically situated on a promontory overlooking Morton Loch. This is a country of undulating hills, attractive glens and sparkling burns and a short drive will take you to:

Moniaive

Three streams meet by this attractive village of painted cottages. Moniaive lies west of Thornhill (past the smaller village of Penpont) and cross dates from 1638. This was a centre for the Covenanters and to the west is a monument to James Renwick, the last man to be publicly executed. Nearby is the Iron Age Tynron Doon and Fort on a spectacular hilltop.

Closeburn

Just south of Thornhill, Closeburn is where The Crichope Linn ravine is described by novelist Sir Walter Scott in ’Old Mortality’. Robert Burns also visited the nearby Closeburn Tower.
