About Thornhill

North of Dumfries is Thornhill - an attractive town with unusually wide main street lined with carefully trimmed trees. The houses are an example of the typical local architecture at its best. Visitors and can enjoy golf, tennis, bowling and squash or fishing either the rivers or lochs in the district. The winged horse on top of the column in the village is the emblem of the Queensberry family whose great 17th century mansion of Drumlanrig lies tot he west. This cross between a castle and a place is built in pink sandstone with numerous turrets and a sweeping entrance stair. Its finely decorated rooms are full of treasures.

Nearby are the ruins of the 14th Century Morton Castle (pictured left) majestically situated on a promontory overlooking Morton Loch. This is a country of undulating hills, attractive glens and sparkling burns and a short drive will take you to:

About Sanquhar

Sanquhar has a golf course, a leisure centre, the Sanquhar Tolbooth Museum and many opportunities for walks and picnics among the hills over which the Southern Upland Way passes. An interesting collection of historic items are displayed with the 19th century Sanquhar Church and the Sanquhar Historic Walk is a trail map through the town following historic plaques and taking in the 18th Century Tolbooth and Sanquhar's Castle, of which now only traces remain. The Castle saw much conflict, and the town recalls it's history with an annual Riding of the Marches, the climax of its Gala week.

North of Sanquhar is Kirkconnel, a former mining village with a memorial to all the miners killed over the years in the former mines. The glens and hills around this area provided a refuge for the Covenanters.
