About Carsphairn

The village of CarsphairnThe picturesque Village of Carsphairn sits within a predominantly rural parish of approximately 100 square miles.  The village itself is situated on the A713 – Galloway Tourist Route, mid-way between the market town of Castle Douglas in Dumfries and Galloway and the seaside town of Ayr in neighbouring Ayrshire.  The Parish of Carsphairn has a current population of around 200 residents.

At the southern approach to Carsphairn sits the beautiful Carsphairn Parish Church, built in 1815 on the site of an earlier Church; it has one of the few central communion tables still in use in Scotland.  Other historical features include commemorative plaques to John Louden McAdam, famous for ‘Macadamisation’ an innovation in road surfacing, and John Semple, who ministered through the turbulence of Covenanting Times in the late seventeenth century.

The magnificent church bell that tolled from 1723 until 1881, when it fell to the ground (considered to be a bad omen for the incoming minister), has been restored and is displayed in the church.  The building itself is traditionally painted white and is surrounded by an interesting kirkyard.

Rhins of KellThe village is also home to a small Primary School, Village Hall, Community Garden and Carsphairn Heritage Centre which is open daily across the summer season.  The Heritage Centre assists many visitors from across the world with personal research into their family history and has a vast collection of historic information connected to families who once lived in and around Carsphairn. The centre also runs an informative and interesting exhibition, the subject of which changes on an annual basis. Carsphairn has several places to stay with two B&B’s and multiple holiday cottages of varying sizes.  It also has a small shop and cosy, traditional tearoom with a very attractive garden terrace boasting spectacular views across the nearby Galloway Hills, it truly is the perfect place to sit a while and enjoy a tasty snack and a cup of tea!

Carsphairn enjoys a beautifully wild and diverse landscape and is frequented by visitors who wish to see its varied wildlife and walk the stunning terrain which encompasses it.  There are many popular attractions a mere stones-throw away.  The deep and enchanting wonders of the Galloway Forest Park can be explored easily from Carsphairn both to the North and South of the village.  The award winning Scottish Dark Sky Observatory is also located approximately 10 miles north of Carsphairn, just across the border into Ayrshire and is visited by many budding astronomers, nightly.  Carsphairn is bursting with opportunities for outdoor activity, from fishing to bird watching, cycling to deer-stalking; the community encourages all visitors who are interested in the great outdoors and guarantees a warm and friendly welcome whatever the season.
